Policeman killed at Esikhaleni

Yesterday at 12:30, a police official died in the hands of the criminals inside the police cells at Esikhaleni police station. The 54-year-old warrant officer who was working as a cell commander was in the cells when he was attacked by awaiting trial prisoners. They allegedly strangled him with a blanket until he lost consciousness. He was taken to hospital for medical attention however he passed away a short while later. A case of murder was opened for investigation and the five men who were awaiting trial on armed robbery and housebreaking cases will be charged for his death. They will appear at Esikhawini Magistrates Court on Monday for the murder.

The Provincial Commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned the killing of the police officer. “This is a senseless act of criminality by those that have no respect for the law. I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the family of our deceased colleague. We will ensure that his killers get what they deserve by ensuring that the case is thoroughly investigated before the matter goes for trial,” she said.
