Media Centre 13 May 2014 A twenty four-year-old suspect is due to appear in the Greytown Magistrates' Court on Wednesday 14 May 2014, facing charges of murder, attempted murder as well as reckless and negligent driving. It is alleged that Monday, 12 May 2014 at 07:00 the 24-year-old man was driving along the on D532 road in the Rietvlei area, near Elsmore Farm conveying twenty nine school children in his Colt bakkie. He allegedly lost control of the vehicle that consequently caused the vehicle to plunge into a farm sludge dam. Twenty four children managed to get out of the dam alive. Five bodies were recovered by the police Search and Rescue Unit. The suspect, who was not injured, was arrested by members of Rietvlei SAPS. Detectives will look at the possibility of adding more charges against the suspect. KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni urged detectives to ensure that the case is thoroughly investigated so that the accused can be called to account for his callous actions. "Members from our Accident Investigation Unit will be assisting detectives in reconstructing the scene as well as ensuring that the vehicle is tested for any defects.
