Limpopo SAPS hosts Rural Safety Summit at Polokwane

On Thursday, 23 November 2023, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe joined by Deputy Provincial Commissioner responsible for Policing Major General Jan Scheepers, Provincial Head for Proactive Policing Brigadier Isaac Mhlongo, AgriSA Limpopo Chairperson Mr Douw Pelser, rural safety community from Mopani, Vhembe, Capricorn, Sekhukhune, and Waterberg Districts as well as other stakeholders conducted Rural Safety Summit at Vleissentraal Bosveld Auction hall.

The programme was directed by Captain Ramoshaba and Constable Mogoba, while Brigadier Mhlongo and Mr Douwer Pelser welcomed the attendees.

The purpose of the summit was outlined by Major General Jan Scheepers. General Scheepers gave a brief description behind the idea of Rural Safety, as a strategy that was developed by Police and people who live in the rural environments not only the farmers. It is also to present implementable action-plan that will benefit everyone with mutual interest in eliminating criminal activities within our communities. He said “We need to support each other, if indeed we want to reach tangible results against crime in this Province.”

In delivering the keynote address, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Habede, highly praised the farming community and other stakeholders for using their resources while collaborating with Police within their areas. Their support is noticeable and contributed towards the success achieved in the Province.

"It is important that we continuously work closely with each other in an effort to fight against crime, promote safety, and protect both private and government properties. We have already liaised with our Communication Section to publish more of the successes we achieved through the support of Rural Safety Communities and other stakeholders. Our services are free, and we wish you a safe and responsible festive season," said Lieutenant General Hadebe.

The attendees were divided into five groups (commissions) to discuss the Limpopo Rural Safety Implementation Plan.

Thereafter, Commissions were offered the opportunity to present their inputs.

After summary and resolutions by Mr Douw Pelser and Major General Jan Scheepers, the summit was closed with prayer.
