EASTERN CAPE - A 35-year-old male suspect has been arrested by Madeira Police after he allegedly raped a 21 year old female victim at gunpoint at Slovo Park outside Mthatha yesterday, 27 January 2024 at about 23:00.

It is alleged that the victim was hitchhiking on her way to Dosi locality around Mthatha when she was given a lift by the suspect on a black/navy vehicle. The suspect drove the vehicle to his place (Slovo Park) where he forced the victim to a bedroom and raped her.

The suspect then took the victim back to town and dropped her without taking her to where she wanted to go. The victim went to Madeira police station and opened a case of rape also reporting that a firearm was used to threaten her. Police followed the information and the 35-year-old suspect was arrested and was found in possession of a 9mm pistol and ammunition.

The suspect will appear at Mthatha Magistrate court on Monday, 29 January 2024 on charges of rape and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
