KIMBERLEY – Through enhanced and coordinated high-density operations in coastal areas, Operation Vala Umgodi addressed a range of illegal marine related activities.

In a joint operation between the South African Police Service, Department Of Fisheries, Forestry and Environment and the South African National Defence Force on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 March 2024, searches were conducted and establishments visited in Hondeklip Bay to identify and act against those responsible for the illegal exploitation of marine living resources.

These actions resulted in the confiscation of fish worth R 70 300 and the issuing of fines to persons who commit maritime offences along coastal waters without authorisation.

Four undocumented persons between the ages of 29 and 35 were arrested.
