WESTERN CAPE - On 22 September 2019, Hermanus police attended to a complaint of a murder in Church Street, Hawston, where they found the deceased with multiple injuries to his body. The case docket was assigned to Sergeant Thabo Mwanda of the Anti-Gang Unit who with little information at his disposal started his investigation into the murder. He gathered information as to what the circumstances were that led to the death of the victim.

During the investigation it was established that the deceased were attacked by members of a prominent gang in the Hawston area. He gathered evidence which then led him to identify possible suspects in the case. A well-prepared case was brought before the Hermanus Regional court and the accused Jonathan May was found guilty of murder. His co-accused Figaro Julies and Jean-Lee Julies werefound guilty and sentenced to five years correctional supervision.

On Monday, 29 April 2024, Jonathan May was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.   

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile lauded the Sergeant and the prosecution team for their efforts and hard work in ensuring that those who commit crime are incarcerated.
