Media Statement from KwaZulu-Natal Media Centre On Wednesday, 21 June 2017, the Mtunzini High Court sentenced Njabulo Buthelezi (31) and Sbonelo Xulu (32) to double life imprisonment each for two counts of murder, fifteen years each for robbery and ten years each for possession of unlicensed firearms. A further two years each for possession of unlicensed ammunition. Their sentence came after the Judge heard how they attacked and robbed the elderly couple at Empangeni taxi rank. It is alleged that on 31 July 2014, at 18:00, the retired teachers Nhlanhla Shange (69) and his wife Bajabulile Shange (67) were shot and killed while at their business premises at Empangeni town. The accused also robbed them of airtime vouchers before fleeing the crime scene in their getaway Toyota Corolla. Investigations were conducted at the scene and four culprits were apprehended within hours after the crime was committed. They were found in possession of two unlicensed firearms, ammunitions and stolen airtime vouchers. The accused’s made several court appearances and the charges were withdrawn against the two accused. The Deputy Public Prosecutor reviewed the decision and the warrant of arrest was issued against Thanda Zulu and Mbongeni Petros Langa. Thanda Zulu was arrested and escaped from the lawful custody before the trial resumed. The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the investigating team who presented a well prepared docket for prosecution. “I also thank the witness who came forward and gave evidence in court that led to the successful prosecution of the culprits,” he said. -End-
