PARKTOWN - A police Sergeant is amongst nine suspects who were arrested in Springs after they allegedly broke into Mr. Price Shop in Delmas and stole substantial amount of cellphones and cash in the early hours of Wednesday, 05 June 2024. The suspects were followed into a safe house in Springs, Ekurhuleni, where they were cornered and arrested. An unlicensed firearm, business breaking implement, and some of the suspected stolen cellphones and cash were found in possession of the suspects. Police also seized two vehicles that were used during the commission of crime.

Members from police crime intelligence received information about the suspects who had just committed a business breaking at a clothing store in Delmas and immediately activated the police from Highway Patrol Flexi Squad to intercept the suspects. The information led the police to a safe house in Springs. Upon seeing the police, suspects ran out of the safe house. Nine suspects were cornered and arrested while others managed to escape.

It is further reported that the suspects kidnapped the store manager as they were busy with the business breaking. She was later dropped off at Sundra Town, without any injuries.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni would like to thank the police from Crime Intelligence and Highway Patrol Flexi Squad for working with zeal and speed to ensure that the suspects do not get anywhere after committing crime. He also expressed disappointment about the police officers who continue to collude with criminals. "Police will continue to get rid of rotten apples within its ranks as they dent the good work that is done by committed police officers on a daily basis," said Lieutenant General Mthombeni.

The suspects are expected to appear at Springs Magistrate's Court for possession of suspected stolen property and possession of unlicensed firearm. Also, at Delmas Magistrate's Court for business burglary and kidnapping.
