EASTERN CAPE - Kiseka Rashid (46) and Tony Lubenga (34) were convicted and sentenced by the East London Regional court on 4 July 2024 for fraud and contravention of section 49 of Immigration Act 13 of 2002. Rashid and Lubenga were  arrested by the East London based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks on 18 March 2021.

On 1 July 2019, the complainant went to visit a traditional healer at East London CBD where he was taken to a consulting room and then attended by the accused who introduced themselves as a traditional healers. During the consultation, the complainant was made to believe that he was talking to his ancestors. Subsequent to that, he was also influenced to resign from his job in order to get all his pension money, he later indeed resigned. After resigning from his job he was instructed by the accused to withdraw all his pension fund and to bring it to them as it would multiply. The complainant indeed followed the instruction as a result he was prejudiced cash to the value  of R3 million. The matter was then reported to the Hawks for investigation.

The investigations by the Hawks led to the arrest of the accused  on 18 March 2021 and appeared before East London Magistrates court on 19 March 2021. They were remanded in custody ever since their arrest. The accused made numerus court appearances until their sentencing by the East London Regional court on 4 July 2024.The duo is  to undergo 10 years direct imprisonment each. They are also to undergo three (3) months imprisonment for contravention of the Immigration Act.
