Media Statement EASTERN CAPE - The East London Magistrates court released Samkele Magcakini (36) and the business entity on R5000 bail after their arrest by East London Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks working together with Eskom South Africa after he was arrested on allegations of fraud, forgery and uttering. Magcakini is an employee of the business entity. On 23 January 2020, it is alleged that Eskom advertised a tender for the provision of facilities management services (Technical Services) for Eskom Real Estate in the Eastern Cape at Mthatha zone. It is reported that a contract was awarded to Sizamahlaba PTY Ltd company as well as another company. Subsequently, the accused on behalf of the company reportedly submitted a Health and Safety file containing information about health and safety management for the project to health and safety inspectors. Upon the evaluation of the file, it was established that some of the health and safety certificates submitted were fraudulent. The matter was referred to the East London based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation of the Hawks for a probe which culminated in Magcakini's arrest on 25 July 2024. The investigation revealed that Eskom was prejudiced to a cash over R6 million.
Magcakini was arrested on 25 July 2024 and made his short appearance in East London Magistrates court where he was released on R5000 bail. The matter is remanded to 7 August 2024 for further investigation.
