EASTERN CAPE - First and foremost, the South African Police Service is mandated to ensure the safety and security of all citizens of this country while at the same time ensuring the wellbeing of their colleagues.

The well-known saying that ‘ charity begins at home,’ became so relevant when the plight of a Warrant Officer  touched the hearts of the men and women in blue when his house was set alight in the gang stricken area of Gelvandale in Port Elizabeth last month . Warrant Officer Willem Smith became a victim of arson when his house was completely gutted by fire after being set alight by alleged gang members.

The Provincial Women’s Network and Men for Change immediately heeded to his desperate plight for help. On Thursday, 18 April 2019, household items, electric appliances, clothing, bedding, cash and groceries were handed to him at a house in Kinklebos. After the devastation, the SAPS accommodated the member in a rented house in Kinklebos. All of these items were generously donated by members of the SAPS in the Eastern Cape Province. The member and his family was overwhelmed by the love and concern by his colleagues.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Ntshinga immediately on hearing of the alleged arson, called on all senior managers and members to come together and assist the member in whatever way possible. “When one of our own is suffering through whatever circumstances, the pain is felt by all of us. We need to stand together and show the unity, love and a caring spirit to those in need. The generosity, support and kindness shown by our members towards W/O Smith and his family is most heart rendering and appreciative,” commented Lt Gen Ntshinga.
