Media Statement from KwaZulu Natal Media Centre Yesterday police arrested a suspect after a high speed chase and a shootout between the suspects and police in Northern KZN. During the shootout some of the suspects managed to flee the scene however, one of them was apprehended after he was wounded during the gun battle; he was taken to hospital and remains under police guard. It is alleged that a family was robbed at their home in Hlabisa when they were confronted by a number of unknown suspects. They were held at gunpoint and robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash after which the suspects forced a 34-year-old woman into her Jeep Cherokee and sped off. The victim was dropped off in the Mbazwana area where she managed to report the incident to the police. A search for the vehicle by the tracking company Tracker, SAPS and SANDF led to the recovery of the vehicle. A police chopper from the SAPS Airwing assisted in directing ground forces in towards the fleeing suspects who opened fire at security forces when they were confronted; a shootout ensued. One suspect sustained a gunshot wound and was later identified as a taxi owner from the area. Cases of house robbery, kidnapping and attempted murder were opened for investigation. The arrest of the suspects who fled is imminent; the suspect who was arrested will be profiled to determine if he can be linked to other serious crimes in the area, and will appear in court as soon as he is released from hospital.
