Media Statement DURBAN - Two more suspects who were linked with the killing of seven family members at Hlokozi in Highflats a month ago were shot and fatally wounded when they attempted to kill police officers in Umlazi on Saturday afternoon, 12 October 2024. Since the mass murders, the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi put a team which hit the ground running in search of the killers. On Tuesday last week, two suspects were shot and fatally wounded when they also engaged in a shootout with police in an incident in which one suspect narrowly escaped arrest. The search continued and on Sunday afternoon, police gathered intelligence that two more suspects were on their way to conduct a cleansing ritual in Umlazi. The intelligence was operationalised and suspects were spotted driving on the Old South Coast Road in Umlazi, and when police signaled for them to pull over, the suspects opened fire at the police and with the police returning fire, a shootout ensued. During the shootout, two suspects sustained fatal gunshot wounds. They were found in possession of two firearms which have thus far been positively linked with the crime scene at Hlokozi.
No police officer was injured during the shootout.
