ORANJEVILLE - A young man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal rape of a vulnerable elderly lady.

On Saturday 17 December 2022, the son of a 60-year-old mentally challenged mother went to his grandmother and upon his return, he witnessed his mother being raped. The police were called to the scene, but the suspect had already fled the scene.

The suspect was traced and arrested by Detective Sergeant Tumelo Dlamini of the Zamdela Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offenses Unit. In consultation with National Prosecuting Authority Advocate Strauss, the 29-year-old suspect was found guilty by Sasolburg High Court for rape and sentenced to life imprisonment.
