Media Statement GAUTENG - The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) announces significant developments in the long-standing case involving the murder of student activist Cyphus Nyoka in August 1987. The case, previously ruled as justified during an inquest hearing, but resurfaced in 2019 when a report revealed orders to kill Nyoka. Following an intensive investigation led by a seasoned detective, four former police officers from the Benoni Security Branch and Unit 6 Dunnottar Reaction unit were arrested and are now standing trial. The fourth suspect, Pieter Egbert Stander, was apprehended upon arrival at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) on April 5. The charges relate to conspiracy to commit murder, murder, and defeating the ends of justice. The four former police officers, Johan Marais, Louis Berg, Abraham Engelbrecht and Pieter Egbert Stander (61) were subjects of an investigation by the Germiston based Serious Organised Crime Investigation's Crimes Against The State (CATS). Stander appeared in Benoni Magistrates Court on April 12th and was added to the charge sheet with other accused individuals. Passport and visa were confiscated, with travel restrictions imposed. On Tuesday, 12 November 2024, Johan Marais, one of the accused in this case, was found guilty at the Pretoria High Court for the murder of Cyphus Nyoka, following a plea in terms of Section 112(2). The court has scheduled sentencing for January 27, 2025, with proceedings for the remaining accused set to begin on November 18, 2024, at the Benoni High Court. The National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya has lauded the tireless efforts by the investigation and prosecutorial teams in ensuring that justice is served. "The DPCI reaffirms its unwavering commitment to ensuring justice for all victims of apartheid-era crimes, particularly those committed by security branches. These crimes will not be left unresolved. We owe it to the victims and their families to pursue justice, no matter how much time has passed. Ends
