Businesses in central Scottburgh have been plagued with burglaries in recent months. Sterling efforts by members of the Scottburgh SAPS resulted in the arrest of a suspect.

Matters took an unfortunate turn when the suspect fled from court under false pretences, but his freedom was short lived as he was rearrested with the assistance of members of the Scottburgh SAPS Community Policing Forum (CPF) from Amandawe.

Mduduzi Blessing Zama (27) appeared in the same court that he allegedly escaped from recently; he now faces multiple counts of burglary as well as escaping from lawful custody. He has been remanded back into police custody until his next court appearance on 1 September 2015.

Two premises in Scottburgh suffered a similar fate during May 2012. During the evening of 15 May 2012, the window and door of the St Paul’s Anglican Church in Cordiner Street, Scottburgh was forcefully entered through. A sound system, food and an urn were among the items which were allegedly stolen.

A few days later, on 24 May 2012, a window was broken and enetered through into a seafood take-away business in Marine Terrace, Scottburgh; a television set was allegedly stolen.

An Amandawe man, who was linked to the burglaries through forensic evidence, disappeared and had been on the run from police since; he was on the Scottburgh SAPS’s list of the ten most wanted suspects; he is also linked to a residential burglary.

On 21 October 2011 a house in Marine Drive, Park Rynie was allegedly burgled during the day; three cell-phones, an internet modem, a blanket and money were stolen. Entry had been gained by forcing open a window. Yesterday, members of the Scottburgh SAPS CPF informed police that the suspect had returned to his residence in Tafeni Ward, Amandawe. The Scottburgh Cluster Detective Task Team, accompanied by the members of the CPF, set out to arrest him but he fled into dense bushes close by.

Constable Brandon Gates of the Umzinto K9 unit was called to assist with his patrol dog Zues; the 33-year-old suspect was sniffed out within seconds and arrested. He suffered an injury to his hand during the tackle and has been hospitalised under police guard. He faces three charges of burglary and will appear in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court upon his discharge from hospital. It was established that the suspect had been hiding from police in the Hammersdale area.

Later on the 20 August, the CPF members tipped police off about an alleged drug dealer in Amandawe. Sibusiso Prince Ngubane (24) was arrested at his residence in Thafeni Ward and charged with dealing in drugs.

Sergeant Kenneth Glover with his patrol dog Judge, and Constable Christian Doncabe of the Umzinto K9 unit, raided the premises and seized 887 grams of Dagga worth a street value of approximately R1 800, 00. Ngubane appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court today and the case has been remanded until 11 September 2015 for further investigation; he was granted bail of R1 000, 00.

The SAPS appreciates the assistance of the Scottburgh CPF members in the fight against crime; this partnership resulted in the successful arrests of three suspects in a single day. This is indeed a significant and commendable achievement.

Praise also goes to Constable Gates and his canine colleague, Zues as well as all the other role players who contributed to these successes.
