Rocklands man arrested for possession of an unlicenced firearm, presumed stolen motor vehicle after a high speed chase

Western Cape: In the early hours of Monday morning, 24 August 2015, Mitchell’s Plain police responded to complaint of a stolen motor vehicle which was stolen in Ionian Street, Rocklands. The members spotted the vehicle a Toyota Conquest at the corners of  Park Avenue and Westpoort Road with four suspects inside the vehicle.

A high speed chase ensued and the suspects drove down Varkensvlei Road, Phillipi towards Ottery. The suspect’s vehicle stopped near a well-known restaurant in Ottery where all four suspects jumped out of the vehicle. One of the men opened fire on our members who were in close pursuit. Our members returned fire and they managed to apprehend one of the suspects and they confiscated a 9mm Pietro Beretta pistol.

None of our members were injured during the incident. Three of suspects still remain at large.

The suspect, a 31-year-old man, appeared on Wednesday (2015-08-26) in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate on the mentioned charges. The case has been postponed until Wednesday, 02 September 2015. The accused remains in custody he will also appear in another unrelated murder case on the same day.         

The South African Police Service will not tolerate attacks on any police member, we will do everything possible to ensure arrests and bring these perpetrators to book so that the Law takes its cause on any form of attack on our members.
