GAUTENG - On 20 September 2023, members of the Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) Vaalrand successfully executed a search and seizure warrant at a plot in Barbuda Street, Elandsfontein, Walkerville. Upon arrival at the premises, gold-bearing soil was discovered being processed by seven individuals, five of them identified as Zimbabwean nationals. They were found operating at the back of the property, utilizing wheelbarrows to transfer soil inside one of the three buildings for gold concentration processing.

The suspects were arrested and detained for contravention of the Precious Metals Act, Act 37 of 2005. Following the operation, the matter was referred to the Priority Crime Specialised Investigation (PCSI) unit for further investigation and asset forfeiture proceedings.

The Pretoria High Court granted a Forfeiture Order on 17 March 2025, ensuring the property in question, valued at R740 000.00, is subject to forfeiture.  This operation highlights the relentless efforts of law enforcement and the PCSI in combating illegal mining activities.
