FREE STATE - The multi-disciplinary, integrated Operation Vala Umgodi continues to yield significant successes in the Free State Province, demonstrating the effectiveness of collaborative efforts to combat illegal mining.

On Tuesday, 3 June 2025 at approximately 06:00, combat operators, working in close cooperation with mine security, apprehended two suspects emerging from underground at a mine in Vierfontein. The team executed a tactical operation, intercepting the individuals.

Upon searching the suspects, the team discovered five gold nuggets with an estimated street value of R350 000-00. In addition to the gold, the operators also seized gold-bearing material, explosive detonators, Borax, and mercury.

The two arrested individuals who are undocumented persons aged 24 and 25, were arrested for theft and suspected possession of possible gold-bearing material, illegal mining and contravention of Immigration Act.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) reiterates its commitment to eradicating illegal mining activities through strategic partnerships with private security companies. This collaborative approach continues to deliver positive results in the fight against this illicit trade.
