EASTERN CAPE - The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the National Arts Festival (NAF) in Makhanda. Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, has expressed her sincere gratitude to all law enforcement agencies involved for their dedicated service and seamless collaboration in ensuring the safety and security of festivalgoers and residents throughout the deployment period. The South African Police Service in the Eastern Cape deployed a total of 105 foot soldiers including members from various specialized units, who ensured the safety of residents and visitors during this flagship event of the Eastern Cape. The "eleven days of amazing" started on Thursday, 26 June 2025, and it ended on Sunday, 6 July 2025 with no serious reported incidents. NAF is a prominent arts event that is held annually in Makhanda, which is one of the biggest festivals in the world, in terms of attendance. The integrated deployments at the NAF assisted in maintaining heightened visibility and resource mobilisation in all the hotspot areas, including the high-profile activities. The law-enforcement agencies managed to arrest a total of 51 suspects for offences ranging from drunk driving to the contravention of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002. Major General Kupiso iterated, "The SAPS in the Eastern Cape will continue to support the National Arts Festival, as the growth and success of these major events is also dependent on factors such as safety levels", concluded Maj Gen Kupiso.
