KIMBERLEY – The District Commissioner of Pixley Ka Seme, Major General Nomana Mtukushe, has commended Detective Constable Priscilla Makoli for her exemplary investigative work which led to the conviction of 34-year-old Klaas Babers for the assault of a 17-year-old boy.

The incident occurred in Victoria West on Thursday, 19 September 2024, following an altercation between the accused and the victim over a cigarette.

During the dispute, the accused stabbed the teenager with a knife.

The matter was promptly reported to the police by the victim, who was accompanied by a family member.

The accused was arrested shortly thereafter and remained in custody until the conclusion of the trial.

The Victoria West Regional Court recently found Klaas Babers guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was sentenced to six years' imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, on condition that he is not convicted of a similar offence during the period of suspension.

The South African Police Service reiterates its commitment to combatting contact crimes and continues to prioritise the safety and protection of women and children.
