POLOKWANE - The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of three accused by the Limpopo Division of High Court in Polokwane for murder case that took place in 2022 at Roedtan.

The three accused namely Malesela Albert Mangena 33, Velly Segwale 44, and Lesiba Solly Segwale 44, were convicted for killing Mr Nicky Janse Van Rensburg, the owner of a farm outside Roedtan policing precinct.

The court heard that on 07 October 2022, Mr Nicky Janse Van Rensburg was shot and killed by unknown suspects. A case of murder was reported at Roedtan SAPS for further handling and the case docket was allocated to Detective Sergeant Mooka, who worked tirelessly with colleagues to make sure that justice is served.

Three suspects were subsequently arrested and charged with murder. They remained in custody after being denied bail until they were found guilty by Polokwane High Court, on Friday 20 June 2025 and sentenced as follows:

Count 1: Conspiracy to commit murder: seven years’ imprisonment

Count2: Murder: life imprisonment

Count 3: Robbery with aggravating circumstances: life imprisonment

Count 4: Possession of firearms without license: 10 years’ imprisonment

Count 5: Possession of ammunitions without license: 10 years’ imprisonment

Count 8: Robbery aggravating circumstances: 15 years’ imprisonment

The court has ordered that the sentences imposed on count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8 will run concurrently with count two life imprisonment.

The accused is declared unfit to possess a firearm.

This sentencing will serve as a deterrent to those contemplating to be involved in criminal activities. "We hope and believe that this sentence will bring about closure to the victim's family," Concluded General Hadebe.
