On Tuesday, 13 October 2015, Esikhaleni Regional Court, has convicted and sentenced Zithulele Ngobese (23) to an effective life imprisonment, for rape he had committed on 10 May 2015. It is said that two girls were walking home at Nyezane area outside Gingindlovu, when they were accosted by the suspect and robbed of their cell phones. During the robbery one victim managed to escape and the other victim who was 18-years-old at the time, was strangled and dragged into the sugarcane plantation, where she was raped. The suspect then fled the scene and the victim who had escaped alerted the members of the community together with the police. Suspect was traced and arrested the same day by the Gingindlovu SAPS then handed over to the Eshowe Family Violence and Child Protection Unit. All gathered evidence was presented to court until the sentencing on 13 Tuesday 2015.

The KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the sentence. “I am very much pleased with the sentence handed down as this sends a concise message to all sexual predators that they shall spend their future behind bars,” she said.
