Man receives jail sentence for double rape and robbery in Mothibistad

The SAPS welcomes the sentences that was handed down to Thapelo Mokomela(41) for two separate rapes and robbery.

On new years' day in 2018 the accused followed his ex-girlfriend home from a nearby shebeen. Mokomela accosted the 46-year-old victim and raped her inside her house. He was arrested about a week later and received bail.

Mokomela struck again when he raped and robbed a 61-year-old female in her house, also in Mapoteng, Mothibistad on 4 May 2018. He fled with cash and a cell phone of the victim and was arrested two weeks later. The accused remained in custody up until his sentencing.

On 11 February 2021 the accused was sentenced as follows:

 

Count 1 Rape =10 yrs imprisonment

Count 2 Robbery = 10 yrs imprisonment

Count 3 Rape = 20 yrs imprisonment

The sentences runs concurrently and the accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be recorded in the National Sexual Offenders Register.

The Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, Brig Nicky Mills commended the D/Sgt Sipho Adrease and D/Sgt Tebogo Gumede of Provincial Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (SECI) unit for a job superbly done.
