Media Statement from KwaZulu Natal Media Centre On 20 October 2015, the Durban Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 31-year-old accused to eight years imprisonment for rape, six years for kidnapping and three years for assault. On 09 August 2014 at approximately 16:00 in Springfield, a 30-year-old victim went to visit her friends at Jadhu place. While she was with friends, her ex-boyfriend came to the same house to visit his friends. Later at about 23:00, the victim decided to go back to her place of residence and her boyfriend instructed her to go back to the room. The victim decided to sleep in the separate room with her friends; a few minutes later the accused came into the room and forced her to go with him to the nearest bush. While on the way, she was assaulted and dragged into a nearby bush and raped by her ex-boyfriend. The victim managed to flee after some time and sought help. Charges of rape, kidnapping and assault GBH were opened at the Mayville Police Station; the docket was transferred to the Brighton Beach Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation and the accused was then arrested a few days later. The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the good work of the Brighton Beach FCS Unit. “We hope that this victory will serve as a warning to the cowards who intend to exploit those who are vulnerable in the society”, she said.
