WINBURG - Free State police wish to inform motorists and the public that the N1 road at Winburg has been temporarily closed following an incident of public unrest earlier today, 30 September 2025.

A group of community members have blocked the road, obstructing traffic flow in both directions. Police are currently responding to the scene to ensure the safety of all road users and to restore order. All relevant role players have been activated to assist in managing the situation.

Motorists travelling on the N1 are urged to use alternative routes until further notice. Updates will be provided as the situation unfolds. Alternatively, motorists can also make use of the R30 travelling from Bloemfontein on the N1 as well as towards Welkom when travelling from Kroonstad on the N1.

The South African Police Service appeals for calm and cooperation from all parties while law enforcement agencies attend to the matter.
