PARKTOWN - The Management of the South African Police in Gauteng has noted the video clips circulating on social media purporting that police are friends with illegal miners. The District Commissioners for Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg, Major General Anna Sithole and Major General Nonhlanhla Kubheka have registered enquiries to investigate the origins of the videos as well as to determine the circumstances in which the videos were taken. Preliminary findings suggest that two of the vehicles are attached to the Primrose police station while the third is attached to Cleveland police stations. Both police stations have illegal mining activities and Vala Umgodi operations are often conducted in the precincts. Both vehicles are deployed at proactive policing at their respective stations. They are charged with providing crime prevention as well as attending to alpha complaints (active crime scenes). Combating illegal mining is one of the police’s main priorities. Operation Vala Umgodi was launched in December 2023 and since its inception there has been notable successes. For the period 1 April to 28 July 2025, over 100 operations were conducted resulting in the arrest of 1 744 people for various offences including illegal immigrants. During the operations, the police seized 27 unlicensed firearms and over a 1000 rounds of ammunition, 840 pendukas, 316 steel pot crushers, drugs and counterfeit goods among others. Operation Vala Umgodi is a multi-disciplinary operation comprising of SAPS specialised units including National Intervention Unit (NIU), Tactical Response Team (TRT), Crime Intelligence, K9 unit, Visible Policing as well as other law enforcement agencies, Community Police Forum, private security and the Department of Minerals and Petroleum Resources. The public is encouraged to report any corruption and criminal activity to their nearest police station or to send tip-offs by calling Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or via MySAPS Application.
