GQEBERHA - The quick response of the Nelson Mandela Bay District Crime Combatting Unit to an armed robbery at a jewellery store at a shopping mall in Gqeberha led to the arrest of one suspect, the recovery of a firearm with ammunition, and the recovery of the vehicle used during the robbery. According to preliminary reports, on Tuesday, 18 November 2025, at approximately 11:10, a group of suspects overpowered a security guard in a shopping centre and forced their way into a jewellery store. Once inside the store, they smashed the display windows and took jewellery. During the robbery, a client was injured and received medical treatment on the scene, and as the suspects fled the store, multiple shots were fired inside the mall. During the shooting, a security guard sustained two grazed wounds to his hip and leg. The suspects jumped into a white Audi that was parked in the undercover parking and fled from the scene. The Nelson Mandela Bay District Crime Combatting Unit responded, and while en route in Disa Road, Newton Park, they spotted the vehicle and gave chase. At the Disa Road bridge intersection leading to the N2, the vehicle was blocked due to a red robot and other vehicles in front. The suspects fired shots at the SAPS vehicle, and members returned fire. One suspect jumped out of the vehicle and continued to fire shots at the members. The Audi managed to flee away; one suspect (30) was arrested, and one firearm was recovered. The white Audi was later found abandoned in Zwide. The suspect will be detained on charges of business robbery, attempted murder, and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The suspect will appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court during the week. Ends
