MAKHANDA - The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape in partnership with the labour unions, Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) and South African Policing Union (SAPU) commemorated the World Aids Day in Makhanda today, 01 December 2025.

Members with other stakeholders converged at the Makhanda police station to recognize this day, as the world was united to commemorate the 37th World Aids Day, and South Africa is observing the day under the theme-"Renewed Efforts and Sustainable Commitments to End AIDS".

The Provincial Head for Spiritual Services, Lieutenant Colonel (Rev) PW Vaas conducted the official proceedings. The message of the day was delivered by the Senior Manager Nurse at Clicks Pharmacy, Sr Masande Nyikinya, "It is very important for people to conduct regular HIV tests, and those who tested positive to HIV are advised not to spread the virus. The best way to prevent the spread of HIV is to condomise. Secondly, is by suppressing an HIV Viral Load, which can be achieved by taking antiretroviral medication exactly as prescribed, which can lower the amount of HIV in the blood to undetectable levels. This is crucial, as a person with a undetectable viral load CANNOT sexually transmit the virus to partners"

The event ended with a candlelight memorial.
