Media Statement
PHUTHADITJHABA – The Phuthaditjhaba Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, is investigating a case of possible child trafficking, following the arrest of a 21-year-old foreign national woman. The suspect was arrested at Setsing Complex after being caught shoplifting stationery. During her detention, the uncontrollable crying of an infant in her care raised suspicion among two police officials, Sergeant Tshabalala and Sergeant Ntlati. The members repeatedly checked on the infant in the holding cells after continuously hearing the baby crying. The suspect was questioned regarding the biological mother of the infant; however, she provided unsatisfactory and inconsistent responses. Her explanation prompted police to contact the alleged father of the child, but it was later established that he was not the biological parent. The Phuthaditjhaba FCS Unit was subsequently brought in, together with officials from the Departments of Home Affairs and Social Development. The infant was removed from the suspect’s care and placed in a place of safety, while investigations continue to trace the biological parents of the child. Anyone who may have information regarding a missing infant or who believes the child may be theirs is requested to contact the Phuthaditjhaba FCS Unit, Detective Lieutenant Colonel Jwalane Rasunyane, on 079 890 0383, or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Relevant supporting documents will be required. Ends
