POLOKWANE - A 30-year-old male suspect is expected to appear before the Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 08 January 2026, facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The arrest was effected on Tuesday, 06 January 2026, at about 15:00, next to the Thabazimbi Municipality building, during ongoing Safer Festive Season operations conducted by members of the South African Police Service in the Waterberg District.

According to police reports, officers received reliable information about a suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm and on his way to sell it to an unknown person near the municipality building. Police responded swiftly and proceeded to the identified area.

Upon arrival, members observed a person matching the provided description carrying a school bag. The suspect was approached and searched, during which police discovered an unlicensed firearm and a magazine containing 11 live rounds of ammunition. The suspect failed to produce a valid license to possess the firearm and ammunition and was immediately arrested.

Investigations into the matter are continuing.
