Media Statement from Western Cape Media Centre The Khayelitsha Regional Court has given two men life sentences for rape, housebreaking, robbery and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The sentences were handed down on 4 November 2015. Apart from the two men, four others were given sentences for several crimes relating to two incidents. All six men were convicted of various crimes regarding to two incidents in Harare, Khayelitsha. The court found that on 21 June 2011 at 02:00 a house robbery was committed and a woman in the house was raped by the suspects. On 24 June 2011 at 01:00 another house robbery was committed in the same street. Again the woman in the house was gang-raped by the suspects. One of the accused was convicted of housebreaking with the intention to commit robbery (robbery aggravating). He was sentenced to five years imprisonment for housebreaking and 12 years imprisonment for robbery aggravating. Another accused was convicted of being in possession of suspected stolen goods and sentenced to four years imprisonment suspended for four years on condition that he not been convicted of a similar offence committed within the period of suspension. Two other co accused were convicted for being in possession of stolen goods. They were warned and discharged. The court and Khayelitsha Cluster Commander, Major General Johan Brand, praised the good work by the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Nathi Gojo from Harare SAPS. General Brand said: “This office wish to take the opportunity to commend Detective Sergeant Gojo for his commitment and dedication towards the South African Police Service.
