NELSPRUIT - The South African Police Service in Mpumalanga has arrested two suspects following the recovery of an unlicensed firearm in Timbavati Trust, Acornhoek area, on Monday, 26 January 2026.

According to reports, police received a tip-off regarding a suspect who was allegedly in possession of an unlicensed firearm. While conducting patrols in the area, members spotted a suspect matching the description provided.

Upon further investigation, the suspect led the police to a location where a taxi was parked. A search was conducted inside the taxi, and a firearm was discovered and subsequently confiscated. The driver of the taxi was also arrested in connection with the incident.

Both suspects have been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm. They are expected to appear at the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court today, 27 January 2026.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi has welcomed the arrests and commended the members for their swift response. “We commend our members for acting promptly on information received from the community. The recovery of illegal firearms remains a priority for the SAPS, as these weapons are often used to commit serious and violent crimes. We urge members of the public to continue working with the police by reporting criminal activities.
