A 24-year-old rapist has been jailed for 18 years imprisonment by Maphumulo Regional Court yesterday, 25 July 2013. On 15 December 2012 at approximately 00:30,  the 34-year-old victim was sleeping at her home  at Kwandaba , Maphumulo when the accused who is her neighbour kicked the door to gain access and raped her. He grabbed the victim to another vacant room and raped her. The victim screamed for help and  the accused fled the scene. The  victim reported the incident to the police  and a case of rape was opened at KwaMaphumulo SAPS for investigation. Through investigation by KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, the accused was traced and arrested on 18 December 2013. He appeared in court and bail was denied until he was convicted and sentenced to 18 years.

 The KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the hard work done by the KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit members for their excellent investigation that led to the conviction and sentence of the accused. ⿿This conviction and sentence serve as a victory against crimes committed against vulnerable women and children, she said.
