An off-duty Thornville station commander was at his house at Emgodini area, Plessislaer on Saturday, 5 December 2015 at about 16:00 when he saw two people fighting on the road. He went to intervene and as he approached them, the suspect pulled his firearm and shoot the victim in the stomach. The victim (25) was taken to hospital where he later died of his injuries. The suspect was immediately arrested and was found in possession of a pistol suspected to be used in the killing of the victim. A licensed 9mm pistol was also recovered and will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes in the province. A murder case was opened at Plessislaer police station for further investigation. The suspect will appear today, 8 December 2015 in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court.

Provincial commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the station commander of Thornville police station for immediately arresting he suspects. ‘The member was off duty and he made an effort to make an arrest. We will leave no stone unturned this festive season and those who commit crimes will face the law, she said.
