Media Statement SPRINGBOK - The Namakwa District Commissioner, Brigadier Schalk Andrews, applauded the sentencing of 40-year-old, Marvin De Klerk, who was convicted for rape and declared unfit to possess a firearm recently. On 15 July 2024, the complainant and her friend encountered the accused at a local drinking establishment in Nababeep. Later in the evening, as the victim and her friend left, the accused ambushed her near bushes close to the police station. Armed with a knife, he threatened her, forced her to undress, and raped her before fleeing the scene. The victim immediately informed her husband, who accompanied her to the police station to report the incident. The accused made his first court appearance on 17 July 2024, facing charges of rape. On 20 February 2026, the Springbok Regional Court handed down the sentence of 25 years imprisonment, following thorough investigation by Warrant Officer Ayanda Phillips from the Springbok FCS Unit. This conviction demonstrates the commitment of the SAPS and the justice system to protect vulnerable members of society and to ensure that perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide face the full might of the law.
