Media Statement EASTERN CAPE - A 55-year-old Ingquza Hill Local Municipality ward councillor apprehended by the Bizana based Serious Corruption Investigation of the Hawks on 16 October 2024 facing allegations of fraud. It is alleged that in 2018 the suspect approached the complainant to register a business entity under his name and it was successfully registered with the assistance of the accused. Subsequent to that the accused reportedly took all the company documents, bank card and bank pin number to be in her possession at all times. Furthermore, the suspect was allegedly registered her cell phone number for bank notification in order to be aware of every transaction of the business company. The Municipality picked up some discrepancies from the details of the company, due to the fraudulent activities committed by the suspect, the Municipality suffered a financial loss to the value of R16 800. The matter was reported to the Hawks for investigation. The investigations by the Hawks divulged that the suspect had intentionally and unlawfully conducted a business with the Municipality as she was not entitled to do so as a Municipal employee since that would amount to the conflict of interests. Further investigation revealed that she purposely requested the complainant to open a business in order for her to unduly benefit from the Municipality.
The suspect will make her first court appearance before the Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes court on 17 October 2024.
