Media Statement POLOKWANE - Ongoing operations by police in Limpopo to combat the proliferation of illicit cigarettes have resulted in significant successes in both the Waterberg District and Polokwane. In the Waterberg District, a 32-year-old male suspect was arrested at Shongoane 2 village within the Villanora policing area on Wednesday, 15 April 2026. The arrest was effected during a coordinated operation by members of Villa Nora Visible Policing. The suspect was found in possession of 42 cartons of Remington Gold Blue cigarettes with an estimated street value of R8 200. He has since been charged with possession and dealing in illicit cigarettes and is expected to appear before the local Magistrate’s Court soon. In a separate incident in Polokwane, members of the Provincial Flying Squad responded to information about a suspicious vehicle driving recklessly along Thabo Mbeki Street. Police identified the vehicle and a high-speed chase ensued through several streets, including Church Street and Mandela Drive. The vehicle eventually came to a stop along Percy Fyfe Road after the occupants fled on foot into nearby bushes. Upon searching the abandoned vehicle, police discovered a large consignment of illicit Remington Gold cigarettes with an estimated value of approximately R600 000.
