Media Statement POTCHESFTROOM - The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, led another unannounced, high-density Operation Shanela 2 this week in Rustenburg, within the Bojanala 2 sub-district on Thursday afternoon, 30 April 2026. The operation was supported by members from various units including the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, Provincial Crime Intelligence Overt Operations, K9, Firearms Liquor And Second-Hand Goods (FLASH), Provincial Corporate Communication, Tactical Response Team (TRT), National Intervention Unit (NIU), Bojanala Illicit Mining Group, Mobile Operational Response Service (OPS), as well as the Criminal Record and Crime Scene Management unit. The Department of Home Affairs, the Traffic Department and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) also supported the operation. The operation was conducted at the Rustenburg taxi rank, the Central Business District (CBD), and surrounding areas. Crimes relating to illegal firearms and ammunition, undocumented foreign nationals, trio crimes, and drug trafficking were addressed. This multi-disciplinary crime combatting operation included stop-and-search activities and compliance inspections at liquor outlets and second-hand goods premises. During the operation 18 undocumented foreign nationals were apprehend, one suspect was arrested for possession of suspected illegal substances, and a 31-year-old undocumented foreign national from Mozambique was arrested for attempting to bribe a police official. The Provincial Commissioner, Maj Gen (Dr) Ryno Naidoo commended the members for their dedication, commitment and collaborative efforts in ensuring the safety of the community. Ends
