Potchefstroom: The police management in North West Province is urging tavern owners to comply with the provisions of Liquor Act during the coming Easter Holiday and beyond.

This call spiralled from a number of murder, rape and other cases that are continuously reported and are directly linked to the consumption of liquor especially during this period. While it is the responsibility of an individual to ensure his or her safety, it is also apparent that the challenge is exacerbated by some outlets wherein owners do not comply fully with the act, particularly the operating times or trading hours as well as the age group of patrons. The Act states clearly in terms of Section 65 of Liquor Act, 1989 (Act No. 27 of 1989), that the closing time for liquor outlets is between 10:00 and 02:00, on any day.

It has been noted with concern that some tavern owners are selling liquor to minors or juveniles which is not only immoral, but in contravention of Section 45(1a) of the Liquor Act, 1989.    In this regard, the act states that the holder of a licence shall not sell or supply liquor on the licensed premises to any person who is under the age of 18 years.

In order to ensure general safety and compliance, the police are also going to be harsh with people who consume liquor in the public areas.  Those who consume liquor in the roads, streets, lane or thoroughfare or on vacant land adjacent to where public has been granted access, are going to be dealt with in accordance with the law.  The community is reminded that drinking in public is a serious offence in terms of Section 154(1) (b)(e) & (f) of the Act. Further that any person who is found guilty of an offence in terms of the Section 154(1) (a)(e) & (f) shall on conviction be liable to a fine or to imprisonment for period not more than six(6) months.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Motswenyane urged the community and tavern owners to comply with the law and cooperate with the police during various operations.
