Potchefstroom: Today, 19 April 2016, the cooperation between the police and the community led to the apprehension of two male suspects, aged 46 and 37, for stock theft in Swartdam near Potchefstroom.

The arrest follows after police received a tip-off a few days ago and acted swiftly on it by infiltrating the suspects who wanted to sell cattle. A Stocktheft Unit member was used to execute the undercover operation by posing as a buyer. The police applied an entrapment procedure in terms of the law and it resulted in the bust of the suspects during the early hours of today and that lead to the recovery of 18 stolen cattle. The areas in which the suspects were arrested include Ventersdorp, Lehurutshe, Mahikeng and Wolmaransstad, are that are dubbed to have an uptrend tendencies when it comes to stocktheft.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 21 April 2016.

In Biesiesvlei, a 58-year-old police officer was arrested on Monday, 18 April 2016, in Itekeng Township near Biesiesvlei. His arrest came after the police acted on a tip-off from the community about a stolen sheep. A sheep carcass was found inside the boot of the member’s vehicle after being stopped and searched. 

He was apprehended after failing to give proper account of the carcass.  He is expected to appear in the Lichtenburg Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, 20 April 2016.

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane thanked the members of the community and the police for their cooperation that led to the success. She indicated that it is only through working together that we will be able to succeed in the fight against stock theft and other crimes. The Commissioner said further that police will not hesitate to deal with its own members who commit crime.
