Media Statement from KwaZulu-Natal Media Centre A 37-year-old man is due to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 3 May 2016 on charges of murder, attempted murder as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The suspect was arrested on 28 April 2016 after a joint operation by the National Intervention Unit, Umhlali K9 Unit and other units. An unlicensed 9mm pistol was found in his possession during his arrest. On 25 April 2016 at 20.30 the victim and his girlfriend was were at the Ezimangweni Taxi Rank in Inanda when they were approached by the suspect. The suspect allegedly opened fire on them fatally wounding Sphamandla Mkhulise (43). His girlfriend was wounded during the shooting and was admitted in hospital for treatment. A case of murder and attempted murder was opened at the Inanda police station for further investigation. The suspect fled the scene on foot after the incident. Inanda Detectives immediately started their investigation and roped in other units to trace the suspect. After an intensive investigation the suspect was traced and arrested at his hideout in the Inanda area. The firearm seized from the suspect will be subjected to ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any crimes in the country. The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised police for apprehending the perpetrator so swiftly. “Let this be a warning to criminals that you cannot escape the long arm of the law. If you choose to commit crime you must always be looking over your shoulders as it is only a matter of time before we pounce on you,” she said. -End-
