Media Statement from Western Cape Media Centre The Mitchell’s Plain police made significant inroads against crime during the past week, from Friday 29 July 2016 until noon on Friday 05 August 2016. During drug search operations targeting 53 residences in the Mitchell’s Plain Cluster, a total of 168 suspects were rounded up and charged for various crimes, ranging from attempted murder, possession of illegal firearms and drugs. Drugs seized in the process varied, included 28 g of Heroin; 176.02 g Tik; 102 Mandrax tablets and 702 g of dagga. Seven tracing operations resulted in the arrest of 36 wanted persons. Twenty second-hand goods premises were visited and 27 shebeen operations were held, resulting in seven arrests and a total of 121 780 litres of alcohol seized. There were also 88 cases registered for crimes against women and children, which resulted in 13 arrests. Traffic action included 13 fines being issued to the value of R9100. Three arrests were made for possession of illegal firearms and two firearms were confiscated. On Saturday 2016-08-06 at about 15:10 the Mitchell’s Plain Crime Prevention Unit members received a complaint about drugs being kept on a premises in Lagonda Street, Beacon Valley. When police searched the place they found an unlicensed .22 firearm as well as 20 small bankies of dagga and loose dagga. A 34-year-old male was arrested in this case. The suspect faces charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of drugs and is expected to appear in court soon. Major General Gregory Goss, the Mitchell’s Plain Cluster Commander, expressed his appreciation towards all parties involved in making the arrests. Police here are working around the clock to prevent and combat crime. Building stronger relationships and partnering with the community in Mitchell’s Plain Cluster forms part of the police’s plan of partnership policing. These successes are a reflection of the good co-operation that exists between the community of Mitchell’s Plain Cluster and the South African Police Service.
