Five arrested in Uthukela Cluster for the possession of unlicensed firearms

For the weekend from Friday, 28 October 2016 until 31 October 2016, police in the Uthukela Cluster arrested five people for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The arrests were the result of intelligence driven operations held in the Cluster. On 28 October 2016 at about 11:30, a 33 year old man was arrested by Ladysmith Tactical Response Team in C1 Section, Ezakheni after a 9mm pistol and a round of ammunition was discovered in his possession. On 29 October 2016 at about 22:00, members from the Provincial Taxi Task Team arrested a 22-year-old man in Stulwane area, Bergville, after he was found in possession of a 9mm pistol and seven rounds of ammunition. 

While on 30 October 2016 at about 20:30, Ntabamhlophe police arrested a 35-year-old man in Upper Shayamoya area, Ntabamhlophe, after police received a complaint of a domestic dispute. Upon arrival they found the suspect with an unlicensed pistol.  Yesterday, 31 October 2016 at about 01:45, members from Port Shepstone Public Order Police, arrested a 25-year-old man for the possession of a .22 rifle in the Mhlumayo. While a second suspect, aged 33, was arrested by members of the Durban Tactical Response Team at the same place and time after he was found with a Z88 pistol and two rounds of ammunition. The five suspects briefly appeared in various courts across the cluster this week on charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“The recent arrests and number of unlicensed firearms recovered in the province are the evidence that we will leave no stone unturned. The arrested suspects will be profiled to see if they can be linked to other cases where innocent people were killed in the faction fights,” said KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa.
