NELSPRUIT – The Provincial Tracking Team in conjunction with Police in Calcutta brought to book a 37-year-old man at around 02:00 o-clock in the morning after he was found in possession of firearms and property suspected to have been stolen.

The suspect’s arrest follows after police acted on information received about a man who was in possession of firearms. Police went to the house of the suspect at Mariti Trust for investigation. On arrival at the house, they searched it and found two 9mm Norinco pistols with their serial numbers filed off as well as ammunition. Police further found 10 cellphones, six Identity Documents, illicit cigarettes and a police tracksuit.

Profiling of the suspect is underway to establish his involvement in any other serious crimes.

In a separate incident, the same police of Calcutta SAPS, nabbed a 50-year-old man who was found in possession of a firearm belonging to his late father.

The man was nabbed during a roadblock on the R40 Road in Mariti, after his vehicle was stopped for a search. Police found a 9mm Norinco pistol in the vehicle and a quick probe revealed that it belonged to his late father. He was nabbed and charged with possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The police management urges community members to follow correct procedures with regards to estate firearms. Should a person be interested in possessing the firearm which was owned by their late family members, they must go to the nearest police stations and apply for a license to possess a firearm.

Both suspects will make their first appearances on Monday, 21 November 2016, before the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court.
