BLOEMFONTEIN - The District Commissioner of Mangaung Metro Major-General Arthur Peter Adams celebrated his Mandela Day by starting a new friendship with Morgan Nqai, the "A" mathematics and physical science learner at Grassland Secondary School. "Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that a daughter of a peasant can become a doctor": Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

Recently, the team from Bloemspruit Police Station attended a complaint at Grassland Secondary School and came across a heart-breaking story of a learner who was the head of absent parent’s home in Grassland 3. What was disheartening about the complaint was a story told by other learners that Morgan Nqai would take over the class in the presence of mathematics or physical science teachers and tutor her fellow classmates, but still had to go home and make sure her two other siblings do not go to bed on an empty stomach. Bloemspruit Police Station and Community Police Forum roped in Qhoema Adventures and Equip Bible Church and together decided to create a warm home for Morgan and her siblings.

The team decided to spend '67 minutes for Mandela' renovating the Nqai house. The house was plastered and painted afresh. Major-General Adams visited the family and encouraged Morgan to block the noise out and pursue her dream to be a medical doctor. "We have no doubt that you will pass your matric with flying colours, but all we are worried about is the number of distinctions you are going to bring home," said the District Commissioner. The family received groceries and clothes for the three learners.

Elsewhere in the district, Heidedal Police Station partnered with Central University of Technology to lay new tarmac on the parking lot in front of the station. The station also handed over clothing, toiletries and sweets to elderly people at Reënboog Old Age home. In Kopanong, Colonel Francis led the team of Men-For-Change and Women's Network and visited Auntie Caroline, who is 105 years old and showered her with gifts, wishing her to see more years. In Glen station precinct, Captain Kamolane and the team bought elderlies warm winter sleepers and cooked soup for them.

Mangaung Metro Community Police Forum Board Chairperson, Mr Setlhako together with Colonel Mosolotsane and Lieutenant Colonel Matasane formed partnership with external stakeholders, cooked soup for people looking for jobs in East End Pooley Street and Raymond Mhlaba Road in Navalsig area. In Thaba Nchu, the team spent Mandela Day cleaning for the elderly people at Boiketlong Old Age home.
