PORT ELIZABETH: Operation Lockdown is still doing good work within the Northern Areas of Bethelsdorp and Gelvandale and have achieved significant successes for the week. Suspects have been arrested on a daily basis for serious crimes, detained and brought before a court of law. Illegal firearms, ammunition, drugs and other items are being confiscated on a daily basis and positive responses have been forthcoming from communities in both areas on the efforts of these teams in ‘cleaning up the areas’ of drugs and gang-related crimes.

The following successes were achieved from 16 May 2016 – 23 May 2016:

  • 3 arrests for Possession of / Dealing in Drugs including dagga, tik, cocaine and mandrax .
  • 3 arrests for  Murder x 2, Att Murder x 1
  • 1  arrest for Robbery

Confiscations and exhibits seized:

  • Large quantities of Dagga, tik mandrax and stilpane tablets
  • 1 Cellphone recover during a robbery
  • Various dangerous weapons were also confiscated

Apart from the successes achieved through Operation Lockdown, policing in other station precincts in the Mount Road Cluster also achieved a number of arrests. A total of 109 people were arrested this weekend (13/5 – 16/05) for various crimes committed which include, among others, attempted murder, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, drunken driving, possession of drugs, domestic violence and shoplifting. 

All arrested persons are expected to appear in court soon.

The communities of Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp areas have been very co-operative and have been instrumental in providing anonymous ‘tip offs’ to police. The police would like to encourage them to continue to do so.
