ODENDAALSRUS - A 32-year-old man, who is known as “Facebook rapist”, appeared in Odendaalsrus Magistrates' Court on Monday, 22 June 2020 on a charge of rape. The case is postponed to Monday, 29 June 2020 for formal bail application.

The suspect was arrested after luring a woman using Facebook, to a meeting where he allegedly raped her in Odendaalsrus on Saturday, 20 June 2020.

It is alleged that a female aged 25 from Welkom went to Odendaalsrus to meet a male friend she met through Facebook for their first direct meeting. It is reported that during the meeting the male friend was wearing a face mask and unknown to the female victim.

According to the reports, the suspect threatened the victim with a knife and pulled her towards the nearby bushes at the back of a Primary School where he allegedly raped her. After the ordeal, the suspect gave her R20 so that she can go back to Welkom. She then went to SAPS Kutlwanong where a rape case was opened.

Whilst at the police station, the victim received a call from her assailant who wanted to apologize for what happened and asked to see her once again. SAPS members immediately hatched a plan to catch the suspect. He was tracked on foot and subsequently arrested in Block 1 near a tavern. He was found in possession of a cellphone he used to chat with the victim, a black beanie head dress and a pair of black-hand gloves.

The Provincial Commissioner of Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane pleads with ladies to be careful when using social media as sex predators use this medium to pounce on unsuspecting female victims. He also lauded members for their swift reaction in ensuring that the suspect is removed from our community.
