PARKTOWN - Gauteng's Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Major General Johan Ndlovu has commended the vigilance of policemen from Lyttleton in Tshwane District, on cornering armed suspects and recovering suspected stolen property and an illegal firearm.

On Wednesday afternoon, 08 July 2020, the members were on crime prevention duty patrolling hot spot areas when they noticed a suspicious BMW parked in the underground parking area at Centurion Mall.

As the members advanced towards the vehicle the suspects drove off, allegedly pointing a firearm at the policemen. Police gave chase and the BMW continued speeding away and in the process driving through and damaging the boom gate.

Police managed to corner the BMW just outside the mall following an exchange of fire with the suspects. Two suspects were arrested, one of whom sustained injuries and was transported to hospital where he is in custody under police guard.

Police searched the suspects' vehicle and seized electronic goods whose value is yet to be determined. An illegal firearm found on the scene has since been linked to a house robbery that was reported at Lyttleton SAPS in August last year.

"This arrest and recoveries are remarkable to the extent that even with such brazen criminals who will not think twice to shoot at policemen, our members continue to place their lives in harm's way, all in the best interest of protecting our communities and their property," said Major General Ndlovu.

The suspects will appear in court soon on charges relating to: pointing of firearm, possession of illegal firearm and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, and malicious damage to property.
