News: WC weekend operations net over 700 arrests and significant seizures

CAPE TOWN - In a concerted effort to create safety among local communities, police station officials in the Western Cape embarked on various operations over the weekend that resulted in 712 arrests for an array of crimes ranging from burglary, possession of stolen property, dealing in liquor to illegal possession of dangerous weapons including firearms and murder as well as attempted murder. The forces comprising visible police and detectives confiscated 517 litres and an assortment of drugs such as cannabis, crystal meth, heroine and mandrax tablets.

A total of 1443 fines to the value of R1.65 million were issued for the contravention of the Disaster Management Act regulations which amongst others include the following:

* dispensing alcohol

* transporting of alcohol

* sale of tobacco

* failure to confine to residence

Other fines were issued for contraventions pertaining to the National Road Traffic Act. Wanted suspects were also nabbed in a number of tracing operations.

The police actions entailed roadblocks, tracing operations, vehicle checkpoints, patrols as well as the execution of search warrants.

The efforts of the forces have been applauded by the Western Cape SAPS management and similar policing initiatives are in the pipeline.
